The Ghanaian government has suspended the rotational celebration of the country’s Independence Day, traditionally held on March 6 each year, due to rising costs. Instead, the 68th Independence Day celebration will take place at the Jubilee House to minimize expenses.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, announced this new directive on Wednesday, February 12, 2024. He cited the financial burden of previous events, noting that the last celebration in Ho cost the state GHC15 million, raising concerns about its sustainability.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu reassured the public that despite the scaled-down approach, the Jubilee House event will still feature a military guard of honour and other key ceremonial activities to mark the nation’s independence. He explained that while rotating the celebration among regional capitals had good intentions, economic constraints made it impractical to continue.

“With our national budget under strain, the additional costs of rotating the celebrations are no longer sustainable,” he stated, emphasizing the need for prudent financial management.
